Breaking Down Silos to Achieve New Opportunities and More Business Value
Challenge: The product-line groups of a major oilfield services company maintained separate stand-alone systems that could not be accessed by company members outside the product-line group. These product-line data silos caused missed cross-product sales opportunities and made it difficult to: locate offset well data, track tool performance history for reliability and quality analysis, and showcase the company’s service excellence.
The company had some clear and strict solution requirements for how to address this challenge. The new solution had to make it possible for users to perform text-based and GIS searches through a Web browser. Additionally, the company wanted to minimize impact on current systems operations and investment—they didn’t want to throw away previous work and start again from scratch. They wanted no new data repositories and no data migration, and, if possible, they were hoping to use available off-the-shelf software that leveraged industry experience.
Opportunity: PetrisWINDS Enterprise (PWE) offered just the solution that the company was looking for. As an integration and interoperability framework, PWE aggregates data from various disparate applications, while maintaining data in the native format and data store (no data warehousing required). PWE adapters connect each of the various data sources and require no modification to the systems being connected to the framework. The connections are mapped, maintained, and synchronized in the PWE Index catalog, which contains the up-to-date information about the available data across all the enterprise silos.
Petris worked with the client company and a proof of concept (PoC) project was demonstrated in just 2 weeks.
Solution: Upon successful completion of the PoC, the project moved forward and a hosted PetrisWINDS Enterprise production environment with single sign-on and full redundancy was deployed in 2 ½ months. Mapping and connection of each system took 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the complexity of the system.
The solution includes text- and GIS-based search capabilities from one location across all connected systems.
Impact: The integration of these product-line systems with PetrisWINDS Enterprise is delivering significant benefits for the client company.
Business Value. Now the company employees can:
- Access well data across legacy systems from a central web client with ease and confidence.
- Discover additional geospatial relationships of data across the systems through the GIS functionalities.
Systematic Improvement of Data Quality. One of the by-products in any data integration project is bringing to light the data quality issues across systems. Every company deals with them due to lack of standard naming conventions, lack of or different formatting conventions across systems and work groups, and human variability of data input.
The good news is that solutions based on PWE deliver a way to systematically identify and resolve data quality issues and implement standardized and easy-to-use quality control measure going forward. The company is making significant progress on improving data quality.
State-of-the-art User Interface. The client company had clearly defined requirements for the solution’s usability and tracked metrics on its performance. For maximum user productivity, the company wanted to be sure that the user interface was easy to understand, interact, and operate, and the integrated solution quickly and reliably delivered desired results.
The original Web-based client technologies quickly hit some limits with regard to information clutter, navigations constraints, and integrated search capabilities (between text and map-based search). So Petris and the client put their heads together and using state-of-the-art technology developed a new, rich web interface with vastly improved information presentation, intuitive and user-friendly controls, and true text and map search integration, for a rich user experience that empowers open navigation and workflows.
Partnership. The outstanding results of this joint effort has the client company eager to continue its collaboration with Petris, helping to define the solution requirements for future success.
