Data from the well to the desktop in 15 minutes
Getting well data from the point of acquisition at the well site into the hands of the interpreter has traditionally been a time consuming and manually-intensive process. Data is delivered to an Oil Company in various physical formats – tapes, files, CD’s and via internet download – and must be correctly identified before being loaded by the interpreter into the application that will be used to process the data. .
Complicating matters further, to save time, data is often given directly to the people who must analyze it. This means that the data – and occasionally even the resulting interpretations and analyses – may not be accessible to others within the organization, resulting in islands of isolated data.
Petris developed a process in conjunction with a major oil and gas company – and PetrisWINDS Recall user – to automate the process of receiving well log data and making it available within the company.
The process starts with well data being loaded automatically through the Recall Autoloader to a Recall Staging (or Project) Database. Data may be streamed in over the internet from the well site or delivered in large batches from public data vendors such as IHS and A2D. Once a set of well data is loaded, an email is sent to the user community based upon their pre-determined interest. PetrisWINDS Enterprise can be used to send data directly without QC delays to a user (as in the case of urgent data), or the data may be checked and processed for quality prior to release. The ‘rules’ for this operation are flexible and in accordance with how the company wishes to handle the data.
Using the Autoloader in conjunction with the Recall Staging Database saves personnel time, allowing staff to focus on improving and validating the quality of the data rather than figuring out how to get it into the system. The Autoloader also speeds data entry; in the case of the customer with whom the process was developed, their database went from a collection of 50,000 wells originally created over 3 years to a database of more than 250,000 wells loaded over the past 2 years. New data continues to pour in at a rate of thousands of well updates per month, all handled automatically by the Autoloader and the Recall Staging Database.
What is the net result to the customer? It can take as little as 15 minutes from the time the data starts streaming into the client’s systems until the notification is sent that data is loaded and ready for access by the user.
Future developments to this process will focus on the use of PetrisWINDS Enterprise to automatically deliver data directly into the user’s chosen analysis application, driven by the same set of business rules that control the loading of the data into the Recall database.
